AS700D

stantonfriedman.com – On February 21, 2025, China’s Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) announced the successful maiden flight of the AS700D, the nation’s first fully electric manned airship. This event signifies a significant advancement in China’s green aviation technology, particularly within the low-altitude economic sector.

Maiden Flight Details

The inaugural flight took place at Jingmen Zhanghe Airport in Hubei Province. The AS700D executed a vertical takeoff, ascended to an altitude of 50 meters, hovered briefly, and then performed a smooth vertical landing. Lin Hong, the test pilot, described the experience as “lighter and smoother, just like driving new energy cars,” highlighting the airship’s quiet operation and enhanced comfort.

Technical Specifications

The AS700D is an evolution of the AS700 manned airship, transitioning from aviation gasoline to an advanced lithium-battery electric propulsion system. This upgrade results in near-zero emissions and reduced noise levels. The airship measures approximately 48 meters in length and 12 meters in height, with a total volume of around 3,500 cubic meters. It can reach speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour, operate at altitudes up to 3,100 meters, and accommodate up to 10 individuals, including the pilot.

Design and Development

Developed by AVIC’s Special Vehicle Research Institute, the AS700D features a comprehensive electrification upgrade from its predecessor. The airship incorporates an advanced lithium-battery electric drive system, propeller system, thrust-vector control system, and cooling system, replacing the traditional aero-engine and fuel components. Its ellipsoid hull and “X” configuration tail fins enhance stability and maneuverability.

Applications and Future Prospects

The AS700D is designed for operations in environments with strict noise and emission standards, such as nature reserves, ecologically sensitive areas, and large-scale events like concerts and marathons. Its capabilities also make it suitable for low-altitude tourism, aerial advertising, urban security, aviation exploration, and emergency rescue missions.

The successful flight of the AS700D not only validates the technical principles of China’s domestically developed electric airships but also lays the foundation for future advancements in green aviation technology. This milestone reflects China’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the aerospace industry.
